What does ‘BF’ mean in MAG365 BF?

MAG365 BF is a bone supporting supplement and BF stands for ‘bone formula’. You may be surprised to learn that there is no calcium in this formula! We have been extensively researching calcium and calcium supplementation for years and that is why we opted to leave calcium out of our formula. We realise that most people get enough calcium from food and also a good amount of calcium is recycled by the human body. Our MAG365 BF supplement instead has magnesium, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3, the cofactors that are vital in proper assimilation of calcium and are difficult to get through diet alone.

Some fans of the supplement refer to ‘BF’ as ‘Best Friend’, ‘Best Formula’ and even ‘Bear Formula’ (a customer who takes it to relieve premenstrual symptoms!)

I have low bone density. Is MAG365 BF plus calcium better for me than MAG365 BF?

Though calcium has long been seen as the preferred supplement for strong bones and teeth, recent studies show otherwise. Too much calcium can be harmful for the body if it is not properly assimilated. These studies have established that cofactors like magnesium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 are important for bone health as they work together to help your bones and teeth absorb calcium.

Most of us get enough calcium from our diets and our bodies recycle a good portion of calcium as well. Calcium supplementation without these crucial cofactors is not helpful as excess calcium can accumulate in unwanted areas like arteries (heart disease), organs (kidney stones), eyes (cataracts), joints (arthritis) and brain (movement and psychiatric disorders). Please evaluate your diet and lifestyle before you decide to take extra calcium or switch to MAG365 BF plus calcium.

If vitamin K2 breaks down in the presence of magnesium, How do you ensure its availability in MAG365 BF?

It is true that vitamin K2 degrades in the presence of magnesium and calcium. To prevent this, we use a double microencapsulated K2 for both MAG365 BF line and PrizMAG plus. This ensures that the Vitamin K2 stays intact from the time it is made until the time it is consumed.

If a product contains Vitamin K2 and an alkaline substance like magnesium or calcium, Vitamin K2 could breakdown and we may degrade to as low as 20 % of original amount within a month of the manufacturing date.  Many supplement companies overlook this important fact, so when you are buying a bone supporting formula, ensure that it has a double microencapsulated form of Vitamin K2.

How do magnesium and vitamin K2 aid vitamin D absorption?

Vitamin D3 (which is actually a hormone) remains in fat cells until there is enough magnesium in the body to utilize it. Therefore, when you supplement with Vitamin D3, you must have enough magnesium to ensure optimal absorption.  For more on this topic, click here.

Vitamin K2 ensures that calcium does not accumulate in the wrong places and hence prevents Vitamin D3 overload. Since Vitamin D3 helps increase calcium absorption, a build-up of Vitamin D is essentially a build-up of calcium in your blood. We have also included Boron in MAG365BF, for optimal absorption of vitamin D3.

What factors made you arrive at the formula for MAG365BF?

Formulation for MA365BF is a result of extensive research. We have ensured that all the ingredients of this formula work synergistically. For example, Vitamin D3 needs magnesium for activation, and without Vitamin K2, Vitamin D3 is not utilized. The nutrients in this formula work very well together to direct calcium to the bones and teeth, preventing it from building up in unwanted places.  For more information, see the article “Understanding co-factors."

Is it safe to take MAG365BF during pregnancy?

Not only are all of our products suitable for pregnant and nursing women, they are especially useful during pregnancy. The baby depends on the mother for the nutrients and since more than 80 percent of the people are magnesium-deficient, it makes sense to supplement to ensure that you have enough for yourself and your baby.

What is the recommended ratio when supplementing with calcium and magnesium?

According to research and many studies we have come cross, the optimal ratio of calcium to magnesium consumption is 2:1. Dr Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, has noted that 1,000 mg of calcium and 600 mg of magnesium is ratio to aim. However, because calcium is easier to get via our diets, some scientific studies recommend upping the ratio. Researcher and chemist, Peter Gillham, recommends we should supplement with a 3:2 magnesium to calcium ratio. Bones require a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio, but the brain and the heart require less calcium and more magnesium to function.

The ideal ratio for you will depend on your diet—if your diet is rich in calcium and you additionally take a calcium supplement, the supplement could be leeching away your magnesium reserves. Excess calcium draws out magnesium in order to be absorbed. Also overdosing with calcium can result in calcium deposits in joints and other parts of your body. On the other hand, excess of magnesium is simply eliminated by the body!

MAG365BF plus Calcium has calcium to magnesium in the ratio of 3:2 ratio and has the benefit of vitamins D3 and C along with potassium and magnesium – all required for optimal calcium absorption.

Your MAG365BF formula has boron in it. Is it safe to take during pregnancy?

Boron is a naturally occurring substance found in foods like nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables. In nature it exists as borate or boric acid. The safe tolerable upper intake level of Boron is 20mg. Our formula has 3mg of Boron per dose which is well within the safe range. For the health benefits of boron, please click here.

Here is one more study if you are unsure about supplementing with boron during pregnancy. This study researched pregnant women in Turkey who had been exposed to high levels of boron. The study stated: “In spite of the high level of daily boron exposure, boron-mediated adverse effects on induced abortion, spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), stillbirth, infant death, neonatal death, early neonatal death, preterm birth, congenital anomalies, sex ratio and birth weight of new-borns were not observed.”

Can MAG365BF help with hormonal imbalance?

MAG365BF has been found to be hugely helpful in alleviating the symptoms of PMS, pregnancy and menopause. Magnesium supplementation significantly reduces unwanted hormonal symptoms and provides relief during these stages of life.

  • PMS: Relax muscles and reduce tension with Magnesium
  • Pregnancy: Magnesium can reduce general restlessness and prevent pre-eclampsia
  • Menopause: Many menopausal women experience poor sleep. Taking Magnesium can prevent that and support healthy bone mass during the menopausal years. MAG365 BF contains all the cofactors needed for healthy bones.  For more information on MAG365 BF for healthy bone mass, click here

How soon after I activate MAG365BF must I drink it?

MAG365BF is an ionic magnesium and that makes it highly bioavailable. Therefore, we recommend that you consume it within 48 hours of activation. Within this time window, the magnesium is in the form that your body can utilize right away—which means that the acids in your stomach do not have to break it down. After 48 hours of preparation, MAG365BF still remains a great supplement with many health benefits, but it will be absorbed like non-ionic magnesium citrate. The absorbency level will fall to around 30% absorbency level (compared to the nearly 100% absorbency level of ionic MAG365 consumed within 48 hours of activation).
For more information, see our article “Understanding Ionic”.

Can I use cold water to activate MAG365BF?

You can mix MAG365BF in warm or cold water. The activation is almost instant (approximately 15 seconds) in hot water, it is quick in warm water (takes 45-60 seconds) and takes about 20 minutes in cold water. The fizz sound that you hear when you mix MAG365BF in warm water is missing when you mix MAG365BF with cold water; the only way to know that the supplement is activated is to watch for liquid to go from cloudy to clear.
If you are worried about the efficacy of Vitamin C dropping at high temperatures please do not worry. Water boils at 100°C and the negative effects of heat on Vitamin C become pronounced at 140°C.  So, the Vitamin C in MAG365 BF largely remains intact.

I noticed MAG365BF is vegan. What is your source for Vitamin D3?

The vitamin D3 in MAG365BF is sourced from lichen which is a complex, vegan-friendly combination of fungus and algae.  Vitamin D produced by lichen is in the natural form of cholecalciferol (D3) and is bioavailable and gentle on the body. All other plant-based Vitamin D comes in the form of D2.
Some other supplements in the market use cod liver oil or Lanolin, a popular form of D3, extracted from sheep’s wool. Sheep are often sprayed or dipped in toxic pesticides to protect them from pests hence we prefer lichen. Lichen is not strictly a ‘plant’ but is considered vegan.

What is the ratio of Calcium to Magnesium in MAG365 BF with Calcium?

MAG365BF with Calcium contains the ideal ratio of 3:2 Magnesium to Calcium. See the FAQ: “What is the recommended ratio when supplementing with calcium and magnesium” for more information.

Is MAG365 BF without Calcium for those who are already taking a calcium supplement?

MAG365BF plus Calcium is ideal for professional athletes and for those with pre-existing conditions that prevent them from effectively using dietary calcium. Most of us get enough calcium from foods fortified with calcium (breads, juice, cereals, etc.). Calcium is fat-soluble and it stays in the food even after it has been cooked.  Also, the body recycles approximately 70% of its calcium. This is why we believe that most people do not need calcium supplementation. You can read more in this article: https://www.newhope.com/blog/time-ditch-21-calcium-magnesium-ratio

Here is one extract that we found particularly insightful: "The commonly agreed-upon ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium found in many supplements traces back to French scientist Jean Durlach... who stipulated the 2:1 ratio as an outermost not-to-be-exceeded level when considering calcium intake from all sources (food, water and supplements). This has been largely misunderstood and is taken as a recommendation of a 2:1 calcium-to-magnesium imbalance.”
