I have heard that you should always take Calcium with Magnesium - should I buy Natural Calm or Calm plus Calcium?
In order to absorb your calcium, to make bone, you need magnesium (and vitamin D3). It is our opinion that most people obtain enough calcium in their diet but do not have enough magnesium in their diets (70-90% of people are deficient in magnesium). There is a lot of talk about supplementing with calcium to avoid osteoporosis but there is not much mention of magnesium. If you get too much calcium, you may develop kidney stones, gull stones, arthritis, bone spurs, atherosclerosis and even cataracts. These are all from excess calcium getting deposited in various parts of the body.
We suggest you first take a bottle of magnesium and then evaluate if you need to take Calm plus Calcium. Supplementing with calcium is a good idea if you are very active - this is because every time your muscles contract, calcium is taken and when they relax, magnesium is taken. Most muscle cramps are from not enough available magnesium to relax the muscle.
Calcium supplementation is good is when you believe you have insufficient calcium in your diet.
How much Calcium do you need to take or eat to maintain the proper balance of these minerals? And, what form of calcium is best to take? Thank you.
Because we tend to get more calcium in our diets than magnesium, Carol Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle believes the optimum level is 1,000 mg of calcium and 600 mg of magnesium. For the same reason, researcher Peter Gillham believes that we should supplement with a 3:2 magnesium to calcium ratio. Our bones need more calcium than magnesium but our brains and heart need less calcium and more magnesium to function. He suggested a ration of 3:2 (magnesium : calcium).
If your diet has a lot of calcium, and you take a calcium supplement, the supplement will rob you of your magnesium because calcium needs magnesium to be absorbed. If you get too much calcium, it will end up as calcium deposits in your joints and other parts of your body. If you get too much magnesium, it just gets eliminated though the colon in the form of loose stools. So it is better to over supplement magnesium than calcium.
For calcium, we suggest Calm Plus Calcium. It has 3:2 ratio of calcium to magnesium. It also has vitamin D3, C, Boron and Potassium which are all necessary to absorb the calcium. Without the D3 and the Boron, your bones will not assimilate the calcium.
If you are specifically looking for improved bone health, another great product, that has even more trace minerals and is designed to help you with osteoporosis is Osteocalm.
What is the source of the magnesium citrate? What are the raw materials or ingredients contained in the magnesium citrate?
There are two ingredients in Natural Calm; magnesium carbonate made from sea water and citric acid made from sugar beets (European Company). The two are blended together in a proprietary blend.
When hot water is added, the two ingredients combine to make magnesium citrate.
The sea water currently is sourced from the sea of Japan and the manufacturer secured a large batch before the radioactive leaks occurred in Japan.
I'm allergic to corn and anything derived from it. Is the magnesium citrate in the Natural Calm derived from corn? If not, from where is it derived?
The magnesium carbonate is derived from sea water. The citric acid was at one time made from corn but now it is made from sugar beets.
Do any of your products contain gluten?
Are any of your products derived from Genetically Modified (GM) foods?
No - none of the products we sell contain any ingredients made with Genetically Modified Foods.
How do I prepare Natural Calm?
Natural Calm works better with boiling hot water to activate it. Many people only use hot water, but the hotter, the better. The hot water activates the powder and puts the magnesium in an ionic form that enables almost 100% absorption (also called bioavailability).
Natural Calm may be added to cold water, warm water, hot water or boiling water. The temperature of the water will only dictate how fast it fully dissolves. In boiling hot water, the change is immediate. In hot water, it may take a few seconds. In warm water, it can take up to a minute. In truly cold water, it can take up to 12 minutes! If you are in a hurry to enjoy your Calm, please use hotter water. For those incorporating Calm into an ice tea or lemonade mix (i.e. "cold") the length of wait is probably unnoticed however boiling water does ensure activation.
Do I have to drink Natural Calm as a hot beverage?
No you do not - the best way to prepare it is to put the Natural Calm powder in a cup and put one ounce of boiling water. After it finishes efflorescing (bubbling / fizzing) then add cold water.
I don't like the taste, what can I do?
- Dissolve in one ounce of boiling water, add one ounce of cold water and chug it down fast.
- Make your calm drink and then throw in a tea bag to flavor it.
- Mix it with some juice.
- Add some flavour crystals to it.
- Buy a different flavor next time.
It works great and I need it to sleep every night. Can I develop a dependency on this product?
No - Natural Calm is magnesium which is a mineral. There are four main minerals called electrolytes (Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium), that are essential for our bodies to exist. They are part of our food and you cannot get chemically dependent on a food.
Are there any negative side effects to taking too much Natural Calm?
If you consume too much magnesium your stools will become loose. This is because the excess magnesium goes to the colon and causes it to hydrate. Most laxatives are made from a form of magnesium.
I don't seem to be able to take a teaspoon without having loose stools, what can I do?
We have some customers who take up to 2 tablespoons at a time. They had to start out with a lower dose and slowly increase. The other thing you can do is break your dosage up, ½ teaspoon in the morning and ½ before bed time.
What quality measure or safe manufacturing standards do you adhere to?
The manufacturers are putting in GMPs (good manufacturing practices) but have not fully complied with these at this point. Every batch of product manufactured is tested for contaminants and potencies which we believe is a good start.
Every time I use Natural Calm my stools are loose. No matter the amount (pinch or spoonful). Is that what most people have using the product?
A small population of people are unable to use oral magnesium, no matter how it is introduced. Our magnesium oil and gel, which is absorbed through the skin, is an alternate choice.
Can I mix my "Kid's Calm" with juice instead of water?
Yes you can mix it with juice, but you have to activate it first.
Put the amount you normally use for your child (or as per instructions on the bottle) into a mug and then add 1oz (30ml) boiling water, wait till the efflorescence stops and the powder has dissolved. Add this 1 oz of water to your child’s juice.
Is your Calm Plus Calcium product enough calcium for a woman in her early 50's?
Many professionals believe that we get enough calcium in our diets but in order to absorb that calcium we need Magnesium and D3. Some go as far to say that a Calcium deficiency could actually be a vitamin D3 deficiency in disguise. Our foods have 30% less magnesium than they did 30 years ago. When you cook your greens, your magnesium goes in the water. Processed foods don’t have much magnesium whereas Calcium is still plentiful. The countries that consume the most dairy, Finland being first and US being second, also have the highest incidence of Osteoporosis.
We have 3 choices for you:
- Calm Plus Calcium 3:2 magnesium to calcium ratio, with D3, Boron and Potassium.
- Osteo Calm Supplement Balanced For Bone Health
- CalMag 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium for those who believe they need more calcium.
What is the source of the Vitamin D3 in Calm plus Calcium?
The vitamin D3 is sourced from lanolin. No animals were harmed for this source.
The RDA of magnesium for woman is 320 mg. I have been using 3tsp (615 mg of Natural Calm) is this dangerous? What about too much magnesium and toxicity to the kidneys.
This would depend on many factors. In general, magnesium only becomes toxic is if you have really weak kidneys that do not function properly. If you get too much magnesium, your body eliminates the excess through the colon and your stools become loose and watery.
What form of Zinc is used in the Kid's Calm formula
The form of Zinc used is Zinc Gluconate.
